Bar 404: One of Toronto’s Top Speakeasies

To kick off the new year in style, my friends and I ventured into Bar 404, a hidden gem that ranks among Toronto’s top speakeasies. Conveniently near St. Andrews Station, this intimate bar effortlessly blends old-school allure with modern sophistication, making it the perfect spot to celebrate any occasion.

Bar 404’s discreet entrance sets the tone for the night, evoking the mystery and exclusivity that speakeasies are known for. Once inside, we were captivated by the bar’s stunning ambiance. A glowing circular bar at the center draws the eye, while cozy seating areas surrounded by greenery and sleek black decor invite you to relax and enjoy your drinks.

The Cocktails

The highlight of my evening? The Got Lychee? cocktail. A delightful blend of lychee, mango tea vodka, peach soju, lemon, grenadine, clarified milk, sakura bitters, and lychee jelly—it was both refreshing and indulgent. The flavours were balanced beautifully, with the sweetness of the lychee blending perfectly with the creamy texture of the milk and the subtle floral notes of the bitters. It was, hands down, my favourite drink of the night.

A close second was the Strawberry Short Cake, a cocktail as decadent as its name suggests. Made with white rum, gold rum, coconut rum, vanilla liqueur, pineapple, lime, strawberry, pecan bitters, and strawberry cream, topped with a Biscoff cookie and a strawberry. This drink was a sweet and creamy treat, perfect for those who love dessert-inspired cocktails.

Speakeasy Vibes & Nostalgic Tunes

Bar 404 is all about atmosphere, and it nails the speakeasy vibe. From the low lighting to the eclectic decor, every detail makes it feel like a secret hideaway. The music added to the charm, with a playlist of current Top 40 hits mixed with nostalgic pop classics from icons such as Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child. Singing along to these throwback hits added to the lively energy of the night!

Location

Bar 404’s location is another major win.

Being right in the heart of downtown, Bar 404 is surrounded by the vibrancy of the Entertainment District. Whether you’re exploring the neighbourhood or specifically seeking out this bar, its proximity to major landmarks (Hello CN tower!) ensures you’ll have no trouble finding it. The ease of subway access, combined with its hidden gem allure, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a unique night out.

It’s easily one of Toronto’s best-kept secrets, and I can’t wait to return.
