Cocotte Bistro: A Taste of France in Downtown Ottawa

Share on:

In the heart of downtown Ottawa, Cocotte Bistro is a chic oasis where French elegance meets contemporary flair. As someone who loves the interplay of great food and stylish ambiance, my experience at this bistro was nothing short of delightful. Let me take you through the highlights of my visit—one that left my taste buds dancing and my heart feeling like I was back in Paris.

First Impressions

Walking into Cocotte Bistro, I was struck by its effortlessly elegant and chic decor. The geometric black-and-white tiles paired with plush green velvet banquettes created a space that felt both refined and welcoming. If the food matched the elegance of the decor, I knew we were in for an amazing experience!

The dining area is cleverly divided into three sections— the bar, the main bistro, and the sophisticated lounge that is connected to The Metcalfe Hotel—each exuding a unique charm. The highlight of the lounge area has to be the beautifully curated bookcase that runs along the back wall of the lounge.

Brunch at Cocotte

I’ve been fortunate to visit Cocotte for brunch several times, and each visit has been a treat! One of the highlights that always catches my eye is their Peach and Rose Mimosa—an ideal blend of fruity sweetness and floral elegance.

Their Eggs Benedict stole the show—a heavenly combination of a smoked cheddar and rosemary biscuit, soft poached eggs, and a velvety champagne hollandaise. Served alongside crispy fried potatoes and vibrant greens, it was the kind of dish that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.

On another visit, I had their Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon and a delicious Iced Vanilla Latte on the side. Equally as delicious as their Eggs Benedict! For those who love brunch with a twist, Cocotte is a must-visit. Each dish is thoughtfully prepared, visually stunning, and deeply satisfying.

Dinner: Where Tradition Meets Creativity

I had the pleasure of dining at Cocotte for dinner a few weeks ago! I started with the French Onion Soup, a rich blend of veal broth, Niagara red wine, and caramelized onions, topped with melted Gruyere and Emmental on a crisp baguette—a perfect nod to French tradition. For the main course, the Roasted Chicken “Coq au Vin” impressed with tender chicken, creamy fontina cheese pommes aligot, oyster mushrooms, bacon lardons, and pearl onions, all tied together with a luxurious sauce coq au vin.

It was a meal that beautifully showcased Cocotte’s modern take on French classics.

I highly recommend ending your evening with a visit to the National Arts Centre (NAC), located just a few blocks from Cocotte. Whether you’re in the mood for a captivating play, an orchestral performance, or a contemporary dance show, the NAC offers a vibrant selection of cultural experiences that perfectly complement a sophisticated meal. It’s the ideal way to immerse yourself in Ottawa’s arts and culinary scenes, all in one night.
