If you’re a hand-pulled noodles enthusiast travelling to Montreal, Nouilles de Lan Zhou is a must-visit destination promising an authentic taste of China’s Gansu province.
Located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Chinatown, this hidden gem has been delighting locals and visitors alike since Ming, the owner, opened its doors in 2014. With over a decade of experience living in Montreal, Ming was determined to introduce the delicious Lamian-style noodles to Montreal. A staple style of noodles from his hometown of Lanzhou, and we’re grateful he did!
A Window into the Noodle-Making Process
The experience at Lan Zhou begins well before you step inside.
As you stroll by, you’ll notice a large window offering a fascinating view into the kitchen. Here, you can watch the kitchen team skillfully pull noodle dough by hand—a process that is as captivating as it is labour-intensive. This window is not just a showcase but a window into the artistry behind the freshness of their noodles.
A Cozy and Intimate Setting
Once you enter, you’ll find that the space is modest and minimally decorated. The decor creates a cozy atmosphere that perfectly complements the restaurant’s simple and comforting menu. Although the seating is a bit tight, they can easily accommodate smaller groups of up to five.
The Master of Hand-pulled Noodles
Ming takes pride in curating the menu, but it’s Mr. Guo, the noodle master, who deserves a standing ovation. With over 15 years of experience in hand-pulling noodles, Mr. Guo and his team craft fresh noodles throughout the day. This dedication to freshness is what sets Lan Zhou apart, and you’ll taste it in every steaming bowl of noodle soup.
The Star of the Menu: Lan Zhou’s Hand-pulled Beef Noodles Special
Lan Zhou’s menu offers a variety of options, including a vegetarian choice and different noodle thicknesses. However, the star of the show is undoubtedly the Lan Zhou Beef Noodle Special. This dish features tender beef slices in a savoury beef broth, garnished with fresh herbs, and served with perfectly pulled noodles. Don’t forget to try one of their delicious tea eggs as a yummy add-on!
It’s a bowl of comfort that reflects the rich tradition of Lanzhou’s culinary heritage.
Be Ready to Wait!
One thing to note is that Nouilles de Lan Zhou does not take reservations. So, be prepared to wait for seating (especially during peak hours).
However, the wait is absolutely worth it as the anticipation only adds to the experience. Plus, once you’re seated with a steaming bowl of their hand-pulled noodles in front of you, you’ll understand why this spot is a favourite amongst Montrealers.
A Culinary Destination Not To Be Missed
Whether you’re a noodle aficionado or just someone looking to explore Montreal’s diverse food scene, Nouilles de Lan Zhou is a destination you won’t want to miss. Each bowl is a testament to the skill and passion of its creators, delivering a taste of Lanzhou right to the heart of Montreal.
Safe travels,
Carina
